Decibel are a RIO (Rock In Opposition) & chamber group from Mexico. The band was formed in 1974. They were influenced by European acts such as Magma, Faust, Henry Cow, il Balleto Di Bronzo, as well as 20th century composers -- Stockhausen, Henry, Kagel, and others.

ÏRock in OppositionÓ offered a different attitude from the common progressive rock style. It went into modern jazz and contemporary music, which Decibel fit into very easily. Around 1975, they began working on their own compositions. One can hear a great similarity to Henry Cow but they are SO different -- much more dark and intense. In their music they have some pure chaotic tracks along with unbelievable constructed pieces with a mind-blowing rhythm section. The instrumentation consists of bass, saxophone, drums, violin and synth. Guest musicians may be found on their recordings. Decibel members played in various underground Mexican groups and in a way one can say that the members of Decibel were the core of the avant-garde and progressive music styles that came out of Mexico. Another group that is strongly connected to Decibel is Nazca.

Keyboard player Carlos Alvarado is another famous Decibel member who collaborated in many bands and also did several solo recordings. Alvaro was also a member of the legendary Chac Mool.

Walter Shmidt Ballardo, the group's bass player, helped us to bring this project to life.

Editorial
The release consists of a box of three CDs which may be sold separately, and includes many previously unreleased tracks (including the twenty-minute Safari Suit, archival material from 1977, the ReR Demo, and others), early recordings, new live material, and, of course, improved sound quality of all the previously released material. Everything is presented in a handsome box, and the CDs includes some amazing original artwork by the band.

Each of the 3 CDs is at least 70 minutes in length.

Those of you who already know the original releases may download the improved MP3 samples to get an impression of the remastered albums.

A few words from our friend Pierre Tassone (www.musicbymail.dk):
ÏI do not think that many people have understood the irony behind the group's name. What they musically deliver is at the antipode of what one normally associates with Decibel (loudness). And THIS... is for me the essence of their music. No matter what happens, the real thing is always hidden in the background!

For example: our ears may hear some bells waving around in no special rhythmic way but the important thing would be that behind those bells, the violinist is "talking" to us, for not using the usual appropriate word "soloing". This is what fascinates me with Decibel. They never shout or if they do you will find this shout at such low dynamic level that it is even more impressive. Decibel defies the laws of music, their music! No "direct" melodies, just fragments, no conventional sense of harmonic form, (changes, poly-harmony or whatever else you name it).

No gimmicks or maybe gimmicks from a new type, which only few have experienced. But it doesn't hurt anyway because Decibel talks to their audience, they tell a story, they really do. They are not the kind of intellectual snobs who think, "We can do whatever we want because they don't understand anything so let's just plink and plank". They are really "offering" us something!"
