Liner Notes:

I do believe, and in fact, it has been internationally acknowledged for quite a while that for the self-styled record collector there is no other country as blessed as Japan. Every American and European label is available here and you continually hear of discoveries of an incredible variety of hard-to-find records. As you all know from the phrase, the "elusive treasure album," currently in vogue, the reissue and resale of rare records that had once disappeared from the market and other prized recordings is fast becoming a new boom. Approaching this phenomena from a different perspective, there are also signs that the Japanese fans are taking a strong interest in the jazz tradition. From the large numbers of people who are experts on the contents of the catalogs and who are feverishly devoted to their record collections, it is probably no exaggeration to say this this is a sure expression of the very high value placed on this type of history and legacy.

Jazz coffee shops (jazz kissa) in Japan have Iong served to encourage an appreciation of records, and have nurtured a great number of fans. Hard bop has always been a favorite of these kind of establishments. As is well known, hard bop appeared big on the New York scene in the 1950s. It developed and flourished against the background of rising racial consciousness by the black musician, and to this day continues to captivate crowds with the emotional and forceful spirit of its sound. That almost all of the representative albums recorded on Blue Note and Prestige have been re-released can be taken as evidence of its continuing popularity. Not only a legacy of the past, this music, with deep ties to the jazz tradition and a hard bop type of mood, is listened to and enjoyed even today.
